HVAC Engineering: Design of Air Conditioning Chilled Water Systems

29 Dec,2025

A float-type electric heating valve should be installed on the return pipe of the fan coil unit. Alternatively, a conventional two-way electric valve (when the room temperature control requirements are not high) or an electric two-way regulating valve (when higher room temperature control accuracy is required) may be used. Compared with the latter two, the former offers advantages such as higher control precision, greater operational stability, no noise, and a smaller footprint. On the return pipes of fresh-air handling units and packaged air-conditioning units, a dynamic-balancing electric regulating valve or an electric two-way regulating valve should be installed. The former is controlled solely by the set room temperature and is unaffected by fluctuations in the external network pressure; thus, it exhibits superior regulation characteristics and a longer service life than the latter.
A bypass pipe equipped with a pressure-differential-controlled electric bypass regulating valve should be installed between the supply and return main pipes. The diameter of the bypass pipe shall be determined based on the chilled water flow rate of one chiller unit.
It is advisable to adopt a one-to-one connection between the chiller and the chilled-water circulation pump. When a one-to-one connection is difficult to implement, a common header connection may be used instead. However, in this case, an electric isolation valve should be installed on the inlet or outlet water pipe of each chiller, and such valves should be interlocked with the corresponding chiller and pump for coordinated operation.
Close coordination with the electrical engineering specialists is required to ensure proper automatic control design, enabling the system to automatically adjust the number of chillers and circulating pumps operating based on changes in the air conditioning load.
